In a world where religion is being replaced by science and where the practicants are decreasing every day, shell we ask the question : what is going to happen to all these amazing church's built by our ancestors ?
One of the best possible answer to this question was given by the Amsterdam based architects Merkx + Girod who converted a 800 year old Dominican church into a temple of books for the Selexyz chain in 2007, in the city center of Maastrich, Netherlands.
With a floor area of just 750 square meters, the architects took advantage of the height of the nave and created a three storey steel structure bookshelf along the church interior, which increased the retail floor space for 1,200 square meters and allows the historic building to be appreciated in it´s magnitude.
Considered by Sean Dodson of the British newspaper, The Guardian, as the most beautiful bookshop in the world and acclaimed by the critic as a model for the reuse of unwanted buildings, the Selexyz Dominicanen is well worst a visit . This is the place to buy a book in heaven !
